Our Sunday Absa cape epic ride had a new rider....Gareth. Along with me and Buzz, Mark Hardy and Lucas, Gareth was eager when we met at the Belgian Cafe in Seaforth for our pre ride coffee. After being suitably caffeinated, we took off for a 70k loop. Now even though. Gareth is a good roadie, very strong and able to put a bit of hurt on, he did tell me before we took off that the nice shiny Specialized Epic Carbon 29er he was on had only been out 3 times since new and he was a novice when it came to mtb'ing. This was going to be interesting as the rest of the crew were pretty experienced on the off road. The first 3k or so of the dam were the first techie bits and as we went through the golf course "wiggle" Buzz put the foot down. Poor old Gareth was well behind when we stopped to regroup after 10 mins or so. We told him to take it easy and that we would wait. Gareth nodded his agreement.
It wasn't long before we came to the Heath track descent. It is a 3k aggressive downhill with water berms, jumps loose rocks and off camber corners. It take skill and practice to do this section quickly. We told Gareth to take it easy. He said he would and Buzz, me and Mark ripped into the long descent. At the first level out point about 2k down, we stopped and mark commented that no one else was coming after 30seconds or so. He said he was going back to check on the others. Buzz and I continued to the bottom. Next thing I knew Lucas was calling me, saying we have to come back to the top!!
Gareth had had a big off, coming down the hill. Looked like he was going to be sore for a few days....He rang his wife to come and pick him up. Once we knew he was ok, we continued on our way.....
